Artist Biography of Myrtle Gordon
My passion for people all around the world is illustrated through quilts and
paintings. My unique views of the varied people of Canada and the world attempt
to capture the special character of each person.
I studied life drawing with Henry G. Glyde at University of Alberta, while majoring
in art education. I was active in The Society for Education Through Art, while
teaching art in Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario. I have exhibited paintings in Ottawa
and Orillia.
I began sewing and drawing at the age of seven. After years of domestic sewing
I added Fabric as an art medium in 1990's. After winning acclaim for various styles
of quilts in recent years, I am now concentrating on wall hangings that show the
importance of people in our communities. I particularly enjoy designing quilted
portraits that show personal and emotional connections of the human spirit. My
recent mentor in this technique is Wendy Rao of White Rock, B.C.
Attending exhibitions of quilts in North America challenges me to sew unique
quilted art works that have been shown in Zephyr Gallery in Orillia. As a result of
exploring the social consequences of quilting in French Polynesia and observing
traditional quilting in China I feel passionate about creating socially significant
Unique People Quilts.
Recent exhibitions at Coldwater Art Gallery, Zephyr Art Gallery, Simcoe Country
Quilt and Rug Show, GBQG quilt show in Penetanguishene, Ontario.
